EMBARC and Des Moines Police Department Teaches Kids Essential Safety Skills

This year, EMBARC partnered with the Des Moines Police Department to host its second annual Safety City program during spring break. The collaboration provided an opportunity for 14 four-year-olds to engage in fun, hands-on activities while learning essential safety skills. The program covered a wide range of topics, including fire, water, electrical, pet, and school bus safety, along with an introduction to police work, such as fingerprinting.

With support from staff and two community volunteers, children participated in real-world safety scenarios, learned about traffic rules, and developed an understanding of how to respond in emergencies. A highlight of the program was the school bus experience. One particularly shy child, who had never been on a bus before, found the experience exciting and began actively engaging with other kids, making new friends and enjoying group activities.

Throughout the program, children enjoyed snack breaks and a provided lunch, ensuring they had the energy to fully participate. At the end of the week, each child received a graduation certificate and a Police Pal sticker badge, marking their achievement in becoming more safety-conscious.

The program is great; it teaches kids essential safety skills, especially in emergencies like fires, which we don’t always have time to teach.

Parents were overwhelmingly supportive, with many expressing interest in expanding the program to include other age groups. Safety City is open to all families in the Des Moines metro area with 4 year old children, making it more accessible to families eager to prepare their kids for real world safety situations.

With strong community interest and positive feedback, EMBARC hopes to continue Safety City next year, ensuring more young children gain valuable safety knowledge while also developing social skills.
